A 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit different parts of the country, especially Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab on Wednesday afternoon with a bout of apprehension with no immediate reports of damage or causalities.
NSMC confirmed the tremors were experienced in Islamabad and various cities of Punjab and KP. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the earthquake occurred at 12:29 PM PKT; its epicenter was close to the city of Dera Ghazi Khan, having a shallow focal depth of 10 kilometers.
The major cities that it included were Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Sargodha, Chiniot, Okara, Shorkot, Mianwali, Sahiwal, among others in both provinces. After-shocks were also witnessed in Malakand, Lakki Marwat, Chitral, and Kasur, which sent jolts and made people run out from their homes and buildings by uttering Kalma-e-Tayyaba in fear.
This was also corroborated by the German Research Centre for Geosciences, GFZ, which estimated the quake at 25 km southwest of Karor at a time of 07:28 UTC and at a depth of 10 km.
Despite the huge jolt, there was no report of loss of life or property. Emergency services maintained a high alert in the affected regions.
The tremor came a week after a series of recent seismic activities that included a 4.5-magnitude earthquake in Swat on Tuesday and a 5.4-magnitude earthquake that hit parts of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and KP on August 29.
