On December 8 in Washington, D.C., the 47th Annual Kennedy Center Honors honored five remarkable contributors to American life and culture. The event recognized outstanding contributions to the arts through an award, and among this year’s honorees are the Grateful Dead, Francis Ford Coppola, Bonnie Raitt, Arturo Sandoval, and the Apollo Theater, all for their incredible breakthroughs in music, film, jazz, and many more.
The annual event will be broadcast live on CBS this Sunday, December 22, at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT and also live-streamed on Paramount+. It is a recognition of those whose work has enriched American culture through influence in the genres of music, dance, theatre, opera, and film.
The family of the Meyer Sound group sent their warmest of welcomes as Meyer Sound, itself a close associate of Grateful Dead and Francis Ford Coppola for several decades, commented, “The Grateful Dead and Coppola are irreplaceable marks of cultures; they have helped fashion the vision of their creative activities, an activity that now echoes further.”
Honorees this year include visionary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, who gave us the Godfather saga; legendary American rock band Grateful Dead; blues rock icon Bonnie Raitt; jazz virtuoso Arturo Sandoval; and special recognition to The Apollo Theater as a historic institution.
This year, under the hosting of the previous honoree Queen Latifah, the ceremony will surely bring immense talent and contributions from the honorees. Their work inspired generations of audiences and artists and will impact the performing arts for a long time. The Kennedy Center Honors continues to celebrate the diverse and transformative power of the arts in American culture.
