Daughters of Noel Tata, Chairman Tata Trusts, Maya and Leah Tata have joined the Board of Trustees of Sir Ratan Tata Industrial Institute. It’s one of the major steps toward generational transition in the Tata Trusts ecosystem.
The two new appointees replace outgoing trustees Arnaz Kotwal and Freddy Talati, who resigned earlier this year. SRTII, established in 1928, offers vocational training in cooking, sewing, and teaching to underprivileged women.
The Board of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust supported the induction of Maya and Leah since the two were extremely interested in the operations of SRTII. Both are integral managerial staff in the Tata Group: Maya works at Tata Digital, while Leah serves as Vice President at Indian Hotels. Thus, both were appointed following the mission of the Trust to modernize as well as expand its philanthropic scope.
However, this has not been smooth sailing. One of the trustees, Arnaz Kotwal, has raised discontent over the resignation process because it came via third parties, bypassing the communication channel directly through the board. In any case, this step resonates with the intent of generational leadership and ensures continuity in governance by Noel Tata.
Noel Tata, who took over as the chairman of Tata Trusts in 2024, is known for his steady leadership and emphasis on sustainable growth. The Trusts will look to progress in digital innovation, sustainability, and global outreach under his stewardship.
