On the evening of January 13, the moon will pass directly in front of the red planet, a phenomenon visible across much of North America. To witness this event, you’ll need a telescope or binoculars as the moon’s brightness may obscure Mars to the naked eye.
The lunar occultation will progress slowly, with the disappearance and reappearance of Mars taking more than 30 seconds to a minute at most locations. Washington D.C. and Los Angeles are excellent cities to observe this event.
