All this ballyhoo to Kevin Costner’s Western ambitions in the production of Horizon: An American Saga, would all fade like smoke, to the very presentation of that initial chapter it promised. What got it premiered in June of 2024 in a moderately lightened bag of just a little less than $11 million, just genuinely not an extensive amount of it for something in this stature and size of films. Horizon has done very well as a streaming production on Netflix but not so much in the theatres for Warner Bros, where it has been placed on hold indefinitely for its sequel.
The saga, which was supposed to be spread over four chapters, has gained a cult following but its cinematic future now hangs in the balance. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 screened at the Venice Film Festival in 2024, but there is no indication of public release. Costner, who is the director and an actor in the series, does not know whether the saga will continue or not. But he is intent on finishing the series, indicating that Chapters 3 and 4 will follow.
The lack of clarity from Warner Bros. has left fans in suspense. Originally scheduled for an August release, Chapter 2 was pulled from the lineup after Chapter 1’s underperformance. The future of the project remains in limbo with Costner now seeking a new distribution partner. Yet, commitment to a Western and to seeing the saga through has given his fans a glimmer of hope.
The saga remains pretty sketchy, but this much is sure: Costner’s journey to getting Horizon done has only just started, although mixed reviews keep surfacing for the film, and some even condemned it for pacing. Horizon remains very much well within the ranks of Netflix and among the top 10 across the globe.
