Special Counsel David Weiss released his final report on the long-running investigation into Hunter Biden, a report that highlighted significant tax offenses and countered claims of selective prosecution. Weiss detailed how Hunter Biden, using his family connections, earned more than $7 million between 2016 and 2020 while consciously evading $1.4 million in taxes.
According to Weiss, Hunter Biden siphoned millions into a lavish lifestyle instead of paying taxes. As a result, while the president describes his son as being unfairly singled out, Weiss said these prosecutions reflect the principle of equal justice under the law.
Weiss said Hunter Biden’s crimes of tax were not justified in any way because of previous substance abuse; offenses continued even after Biden got sober in 2019. The investigation also targeted very lucrative business activities, including his seat on the Burisma board of directors and activities with the Chinese energy conglomerate.
Hunter Biden was charged with tax evasion and gun offenses in 2023. He was, however, pardoned by his father in December as controversy ensued. Weiss was criticizing the president over his comments that undermined public confidence in the judicial system over this case.
While the lawyer for Hunter Biden called it an abuse of prosecutorial power, Weiss maintained his ground, citing that political thoughts never influenced him in making such decisions. This investigation took a whole six years, and charges against President Joe Biden for criminal behavior were not implicated.
Weiss maintains that such a report remains a statement of the pure exercise of the application of justice regardless of stature or connection to someone.
