The long-awaited successor to the highly successful Nintendo Switch console has finally been released by Nintendo. Dubbed the “Nintendo Switch 2,” the announcement came through a teaser video, with additional details promised during a Nintendo Direct scheduled for April 2, 2025.
The Switch 2 will stick to the hybrid design of its predecessor but with handheld and docked gameplay. The new console has a slightly larger form factor and magnetic Joy-Con controllers that now double as a mouse-like input device. Backward compatibility has been confirmed, meaning that both physical and digital Switch games will be able to run on the new hardware, though some games might have compatibility issues.
One of the most notable is the new Mario Kart, which promises much to the fans. Exciting though the announcement is, however, it has kept the release date and price for the console up in the air.
Experience events for the Nintendo Switch 2 will be available for hands-on previews in major cities around the world, including New York, Paris, and Tokyo, starting in April 2025. Tickets for these events will be available through a Nint Account and can be reserved starting January 17, 2025.
The Nin-Switch has sold more than 146 million units worldwide. Its successor is expected to be even more successful with new features and improved game compatibility.
More details about the specifications and the software lineup are to appear in the next Nintendo Direct. Fans and industry insiders eagerly await more details about the console that will define the next generation of gaming.
