Republican Congressman Andy Ogles of Tennessee proposed an amendment to the U.S. Constitution seeking a president to serve a third term. This bill, therefore, attacks head-on the constraints brought about by the 22nd Amendment limiting a president to only two elected terms.
On Thursday, in a statement, Ogles said moving into the contest will provide former President Donald Trump room to continue leadership with more breathing space after noting that former President Donald Trump’s policies will restore what the administration referred to as “the decline caused by the Biden administration.” That’s correct; President Trump has proven himself the only figure able to make America great once more.”. This amendment would ensure he has the time necessary to achieve those goals.”
The proposed amendment would move to change the current wording of the 22nd Amendment to allow any president to serve a third term, assuming all such terms were nonconsecutive ones. As a result, presidents, including Barack Obama and George W. Bush, would cease to be eligible to run since they had earlier served two previous terms consecutively.
Ogles made this proposal when Trump had just begun his second, non-consecutive term. He is the second U.S. president to attain this status after Grover Cleveland. Trump has hinted at once that he would serve more than two terms by stating in various speeches that the extension of his term in office may be considered if his leadership is deemed irreplaceable.
Ogles’ amendment might have passion on his side but will not have much support because: A constitutional amendment needs a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate and ratification by three-fourths of the states. The polarized political climate is not likely to give this resolution enough support.
Among them are Rep. Becca Balint of Vermont and Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee, who say the proposal is a political act of desperation. Cohen joked that “two terms are enough chaos for any nation to endure.”
Ogles said the proposal is a necessary step to give President Trump the tools he needs to lead the nation.
