Arctic Blasts
UK Braces for Arctic Blast After Severe Thunderstorms

Arctic Blast in England

Britain is bracing for a temperature plummet as a wave of Arctic air freezes the country this week. After highs of about 20ยฐC in a relatively mild spell, forecasters said temperatures were set to plunge by up to 10 degrees overnight, with London struggling to top 15ยฐC from Wednesday to Friday.

Weather forecasting website WXCharts – which uses data from MetDesk to refine forecasts – highlights the exact periods of this Arctic blast: next Wednesday, between midnight and 6 am, and then from 9 pm until midnight; Thursday, between 12 am and 6 am, and then from 9 pm to midnight; Friday, midnight until 6 am. During these periods, temperatures everywhere in the UK are forecast to drop into single figures, from zero to five degrees Celsius.

This cold snap follows off the back of severe thunderstorms, which battered the UK over the weekend, with many comparing the scenes to H.G. Wells’ “The War of the Worlds.” It came after the Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for southern England and Wales, foreseeing heavy rain that could be thundery, causing flooding and disruptions.

Meanwhile, the south will have to prepare for successive rainfall and a generally disrupted outlook, whereas high pressure will be prevalent in the north, bringing clearer skies and rising temperatures. However, temperatures are expected to remain decidedly below average in the south, with overnight lows possibly reaching down to 4ยฐC towards the end of the week. The Met Office already recorded a low of 7ยฐC in London on Tuesday night.

Johnathan Vautrey with the Met Office confirmed for most of the week, the temperature will range from 4-6ยฐC below average and might touch snow on the highest peaks of Scotland. The clearer and chillier Arctic air will be dominant, which will create a shocking contrast for the UK to the thunderstorms of late that mark an end to the week with cold temperatures.
