Tecno Phantom V Fold2 and Phantom V Flip2
Tech giant Tecno has finally unveiled its latest foldable series, featuring the Tecno Phantom V Fold2 and the Phantom V Flip2. For this, it intends to disrupt the market with a premium, AI-packed foldable with more affordable pricing.
The Phantom V Fold2 carries noticeable upgrades over its predecessor while continuing to retain crucial specs, including the very powerful MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ chip, a 7.85-inch inner AMOLED display, and a cover display measuring 6.42 inches. One major upgrade is its construction: it measures 6.1 mm thick when unfolded and 12 mm thick when folded, and the weight comes in at 249 grams, considerably less than the near 300-gram predecessors. Not stopping here, even with this weight reduction, Tecno has managed to bump up the battery size to 5,750 mAh, supporting 70 W wired and 15 W wireless charging.
As for the AI integration, Tecno has equipped the Phantom V Fold2 with the Ella AI assistant, which is powered by Google Gemini. It brings a host of advanced features that are expected, including real-time Q&A, AI-assisted writing, PDF and webpage summarization, live translation during calls, and even AI-enhanced photo editing through its Universal Tone Technology. Users can also create custom wallpapers using AI from simple text prompts.
The Fold2 comes with an improved camera setup: a rear triple-camera system of 50 MP and dual selfie cameras of 32 MP each. This sounds like quite a combination of high-quality shots, while the rear cameras contain a wide, ultra-wide lens, and portrait lens to make photography somewhat versatile.
While other foldables have prices starting at upwards of $2,000, the Tecno Phantom V Fold2 will retail at just $1,099. The foldable launches on September 23 in Africa, with subsequent events across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.
But launched alongside the Fold2 was the Tecno Phantom V Flip2, a clamshell foldable housing similar AI capability, but in a much smaller form. The device has a 3.64-inch square cover screen and a 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED inner display. It houses over 2,000 compatible apps on the Flip2’s cover screen, enabling users to do pretty much everything without opening the phone. Of course, there are also the interactive pets you can play with for an added dose of fun and quirkiness.
The Flip2 impresses equally with its photography capability, boasting dual 50 MP rear cameras, an inner selfie camera of 32 MP, along with a 150-degree ultra-wide-angle lens. It contains one of the largest batteries in the category of flip foldable: a 4,720mAh unit capable of reaching 50% charge in 15 minutes, courtesy of 70W fast charging.
The Phantom V Flip2 will follow, starting September 23, and will be priced at $699. Like Fold2, it will roll out across multiple regions later in the year.
The two are loaded to the gills with AI-powered features such as Translation, Writing assistance, and UI Customization. That makes Tecno a serious player in the foldable smartphone market indeed.
