Barbados Royals vs Trinbago Knight riders

In a nail-biting 15th match of the Caribbean Premier League, 2024, the Trinbago Knight Riders beat the Barbados Royals by 2 wickets with one ball to spare, in Bridgetown on September 13th. The match had twists at every turn until it came down to the Knight Riders heroic lower order that sealed the deal in a nail-biting chase of 157.

The Royals made 156/7 in their allotted 20 overs to set a target of 157. Captain Rovman Powell played a fighting knock of 59 from 38 balls, ably supported by the quickfire 39 off 21 balls from Quinton de Kock. Despite the resistance of the Royals, Trinbago’s bowlers, led by Akeal Hosein 2/29 and Maheesh Theekshana 3/26, were able to restrict their opponents to a chaseable total.

Trinbago’s response started steadily, the match getting away from them as wickets fell at most pivotal moments. It had seemed all over for Trinbago at 151/8 with two balls remaining, yet an inspired 14 runs off 5 balls by Terrance Hinds inclusive of a crucial six over a No-ball in the ultimate over of the game saw it turn in a direction where a win could be achieved. Akeal Hosein scored 20 off 10 balls before getting dismissed while the final run was courtesy of Jayden Seales off one ball remaining.

Hosein also collected the Player of the Match award while Waqar Salamkheil’s 3/13 and game-high 101.19 MVP points made him Cricinfo’s MVP of the match.

Trinbago Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard praised the team highly for the contribution of Akeal Hosein and Terrance Hinds in the encounter. “It was a total team effort tonight,” an overjoyed Pollard said afterward. “Even when some guys don’t do the job, the others step up.”

The Royals’ captain, Rovman Powell, was proud of his team’s fight, but he felt that they were some 10-15 runs short towards the end. He also showed anger for the controversial ball change late in the match and promised that his side would bounce back quickly for their next game against Guyana Amazon Warriors.

This defeat ended the unbeaten run for the Royals in CPL 2024, and they have much work to do in quick time as the next challenge comes up.
