With the 2024 presidential election on the horizon, late-night host Jimmy Kimmel took to the monologue stage on a rare occasion and delivered a serious message directly to Republican voters: reconsider your support for former President Donald Trump. Kimmel acknowledged his usual tone but begged viewers to take his words seriously and share the message with Trump supporters.

Then he openly and candidly admitted the divide in the country, admitting that maybe through his show, he might have probably contributed to that polarised political climate. “I do a lot of mocking, and belittling,” he acknowledged, adding that if his views on Trump are strong, he certainly believes there are reasons that are worth considering and will be for those who, like him, may or would disagree with him.

In the monologue, Kimmel pointed out how since his first campaign in 2015, Trump had promised time and time again a replacement for Obamacare, which never came into existence during his four-year term. Kimmel questioned how committed Trump was to tackling really big issues like healthcare because of the lack of real solutions within the promises by the former president.

Trump was further lambasted by Kimmel about his fright-induced speeches on issues that include so-called forced changes in gender at schools that he said: “is an imaginary problem that’s meant to get your attention away from other, actual problems.” Kimmel also said that as a president, Trump should pay more heed to factual concerns and not so much to what he deemed techniques of fear-mongering.

In addition, Kimmel pointed out the history of election interference allegations on Trump’s part and cautioned that it could happen again in 2024. He also mentioned that even some of the closest allies of Trump, such as former Vice President Mike Pence, have moved away from his current campaign—a big change Kimmel called on Republicans to think about.

In a final musing, Kimmel remarks on the divisive mentality he can feel among Trump supporters that was captured in a T-shirt he saw: “I support Trump because he pisses off the people who piss me off.” He asks for political support to be motivated because they want to piss off the other side and urges the Republicans to focus on unifying and constructive leadership.
