The latest iteration of odd sleeping habits involves a 40-year-old father and bodybuilder from Japan named Daisuke Hori, who seems to have achieved what would be impossible to most of us: more than doubling his active life on only 30 to 45 minutes of sleep per night for over a dozen years.

Hori, of Hyogo Prefecture in northwest Osaka, has conditioned both his body and mind to function at optimal levels on this ultra-short sleep schedule. What’s his secret? A mix of serious exercise and well-placed caffeine to stave off the sleepiness. “As long as you do sports or drink coffee an hour before eating, you can stave off drowsiness,” said Hori, according to the South China Morning Post.

That all started 12 years ago when Hori began shaving off precious minutes of sleep each day to buy extra time for work. Today, the entrepreneur’s average day involves a scant 26 minutes of rest in which he retires, waking up refreshed and brimming with energy. His approach is to stress the quality and not the quantity of rest, similar to how doctors and firefighters go about their demanding schedules.

A dedicated evangelist for his method, Hori started the Japan Short Sleepers Training Association back in 2016. By the end of last year, he said he had trained some 2,100 to live similarly, including one student who managed to cut her eight-hour sleep to just 90 minutes each day.

But experts caution against such extreme sleep deprivation, even as Hori credits the practice with boosting his productivity and well-being. The National Institutes of Health recommends at least seven hours a night for optimal health, citing a lack of sleep can make a person obese, and lead to heart disease, and depression.

The lifestyle of Hori has divided opinions, with some hailing his efficient way of managing time and others concerned about his health in the long run. Being the latest in a line of entrepreneurs fighting against Father Time, the unique approach that Hori has to sleep continues to capture worldwide attention.

This makes him either a time lord or an addict to health-killer routines. In any case, Daisuke Hori’s odd sleeping habit is a testament to the lengths some will go to in pursuit of more productive hours.
