Baltasar Ebang Engonga, Equatorial Guinea’s chief of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), is now in jail. He was taken into custody after over 400 taped sexual activities with prominent women; some even wives of top-notch officials- hit headlines. He allegedly uncovered the tapes during a fraud investigation in his residential home and the office where hundreds of CDs containing explicit footage were discovered.
An economist aged 54 years old is said to be behind these tapes of his numerous affairs with various women, among them relatives of politicians and wives of high-ranking government officials. Among the women involved, his brother’s wife, his cousin, the sister of the President of Equatorial Guinea, and several wives of ministers are included, according to reports. Made reportedly with the consent of the women, the tapes have been the cause of media frenzy and have tarnished the country’s image.
Indeed, the local newspaper Ahora EG reports that his real name is Engonga, and in fact, Bello has reportedly done this in the past few years, some even in his office as the government, right before the national flag. The government of Equatorial Guinea sternly declares a “zero tolerance” for any unethical practices by government officers.
In a statement, Vice President Nguema Mangue condemned the actions as violating Public Ethics Law and Code of Conduct. Mangue underscored the need for ethics and respect within the government, insisting that such violations of trust cannot be allowed.
The attorney general said that the sexual acts seem to be consensual but coercion will not be taken lightly and prosecuted. He noted the health danger in public and appealed for people sexually raped to step forward.
