In a disturbing case from Lahore’s Defence area, former film actress Nargis, alias Ghazala Idris, has reportedly been assaulted by her husband, Inspector Majid Bashir. According to local police, the alleged incident arose from a financial dispute between the couple.
Nargis went to the police station at night but didn’t file a written complaint. An officer pointed out, “We would take action if the matter is filed in writing.” She says her brother Khurram has been the one who has been under consistent harassment by Inspector Bashir. Khurram, upon seeing his sister under physical attack, rang 112, the emergency police helpline number, an act that was followed up on by the authorities. Khurram is demanding drastic action against his sister’s husband, saying it’s a long-standing situation.
Punjab Women Protection Authority Chairperson Hina Pervaiz Butt said that the government was committed to women’s safety. “Nargis has been provided with security,” Butt said. “Subjecting women to torture is one of the heinous crimes we are determined to combat.” She reiterated that protecting and ensuring justice for women remains a top priority for the authority.
It is the latest case of an assault against a woman. The concerns are for all cases, including the number of instances of domestic violence and protection available for women in Pakistan. Recently, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized the zero-tolerance given to violence against women that such action should not even be taken but that they must act swiftly when committed.
