Aly & AJ musical duo half, AJ Michalka, went it alone for this season on The Masked Singer. She had planned to be paired up with her sister Aly who recently gave birth. Thus, she ended up as the sweet Strawberry Shortcake and performed alone until being eliminated in the Semi-Finals, as Buffalos went on to make it to the finale.
“This was meant to be a team effort, but scheduling didn’t pan out,” Michalka told Variety. “Aly supported me fully and I decided to challenge myself as a solo performer. It was exhilarating and rewarding.”
Throughout the season, Michalka demonstrated her vocal range by singing “Lose You to Love Me” by Selena Gomez, “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus, and “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack, which was dedicated to her mother. “It was a message of encouragement for her to rediscover her love for singing,” Michalka said.
None of the panelists had correctly guessed who the Mystery Guest was, however – it was Strawberry Shortcake. The guesses for that identity included Sarah Hyland, and Kelsea Ballerini, among others. At the Semi-Final showdown, Strawberry Shortcake performed a “smack royale,” singing OneRepublic’s “Counting Stars,” where she was barely defeated by a team of Buffalos.
The episode featured a group performance of Fun’s “Some Nights.” More uniquely the season included themed episodes based on Miley Cyrus, and Footloose, among others.
Now revealed, AJ Michalka joins a distinguished list of unmasked celebrities this season, including Jana Kramer, Laverne Cox, and Natalie Imbruglia. Host Nick Cannon, alongside panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and guest Rita Ora, guided viewers through an eventful Season 12.
With the finale approaching, Buffalos and Wasp are set to battle it out for the top prize. Fans eagerly await to know who will be crowned this season’s winner of The Masked Singer.
