The famous composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have announced separation after nearly three decades of marriage. The couple issued a joint statement through their lawyer, Vandana Shah, calling it an end to their relationship “due to emotional strain.” The couple also said they were separating after due thought and would like to be granted privacy from the public in this hour of trial.
“Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap,” read the statement. The couple has three children – Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen – who have also sought privacy amidst the ongoing speculation by the media.
Interestingly, on the same day, bassist Mohini Dey, known for extensive touring with AR Rahman, announced her decision to separate from musician Mark Hartsuch. Online rumors have put the two separations together; however, Rahman’s lawyer quickly denied any connection at all stating, “There is no connection at all. Saira and Mr. Rahman made this decision independently.
Mohini Dey also clarified her position through an Instagram post, thanking people for the support she and Mark received as well as asking for people to respect their privacy. “We appreciate your support and ask for no judgments during this time,” she said.
AR Rahman took to social media to address the separation. He posted an emotional note on his Twitter account talking about the travelogue of their journey and how difficult the relationship was. “Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts,” he wrote.
The announcement has sparked the question of Rahman’s life, his spiritual conversion, and his journey. Religious conversion is seen to have been talked about seriously, which Rahman had clarified was deeply personal, and founded on spiritual experiences.
Both Rahman and Saira Banu again stated that they would amicably bring their divorce proceedings to an end with due care and regard for their family’s well-being.
