Early Age

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem hails from a small town in the Punjab province known as Mian Channu. Arshad could not access any of the modern facilities with professional training that athletes from developed countries have, simply depending on his gifted talent and available local resources.

Arshad followed up his athletics from this upbringing that he had developed for the various parts of the games such as cricket and volleyball. However, it was in the javelin throw that he developed his calling. His raw talent was very alive, and he soon began to enter his name in the national competitions. Despite the sacrifices he would levy upon himself, Arshad cemented his responsibilities to ensure he made it to the very top of the game.

The Struggles Along the Way

Arshad has had quite an excruciating journey to the Olympics, traveling in the absence of good facilities, coaching, and financial support for international competitions. Being under-resourced, Arshad had to train for his javelin throw in stadiums located in obscure cities. In most cases, there were no professional coaches available to guide him, so he had to double his efforts to close the gap set by the required PV score.

Yet, it was this struggle that made Arshad stronger. And one of his key traits became his ability to never give up no matter how swollen his knee was. He started going on tours abroad whenever opportunities were made available to him.

He participated in training camps in China, Turkey, etc. etc, which helped him to get his skills.

By attaining these exposures, Arshad got the typical pieces of training through which he could challenge and compete against the best performers in the world.

A Breakthrough Moment: The Tokyo 2020 Olympics

It was during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in 2021 on grounds of the pandemic, when Arshad Nadeem truly made an announcement of himself on the world stage. He was the first Pakistani athlete to make it to the final in a track and field event at the Olympics—a prodigious feat. In competition against the world’s greatest, Arshad turned in a sterling performance, finishing fifth overall with a throw of 84.62m. Though he barely missed earning a medal, his performance has dovetailed hope in Pakistan for future success.
