In an important address to the National Assembly, PPP chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari declared that this 26th Constitutional Amendment fulfills the “unfinished business” of the Charter of Democracy. The politician termed the amendment as an important political victory for Parliament and a very crucial step toward strengthening democracy in Pakistan.
Bilawal thanked and said that the Maulana Fazlur Rehman, chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam’s (F), played a key role throughout the whole debate in which the amendment was passed, and he further thanked the other political parties like PML-N, MQM-P, IP-G, and ANP.
We are required to work together for the supremacy of Parliament. All political factions are of one word on it,” said Bilawal reiterating his commitment to the supremacy of Parliament. He also stressed that a coordinated effort was required to do away with political polarization in the country. “We have to work together so that the voice of Parliament is paramount.”.
Those who have always stood by dictators should not pretend to be champions of democracy,” Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said, reiterating that the 26th Amendment is a historic step towards reinstatement of parliamentary supremacy.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman briefed upon the importance of the 26th Amendment in his speech: He said that this will empower the Parliament instead of serving any individual’s interests. He said that constructive dialogue and cooperation were needed in legislature work, arguing that this amendment reflects the collective commitment to strengthening democratic institutions in Pakistan.
