The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has made significant efforts to improve services by engaging international partners in London. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation held meetings to support BISP’s initiatives with digital innovation and integrated interventions for women and children in Pakistan.
Its Chairperson Senator Rubina Khalid and Secretary Amer Ali Ahmed initiated discussions on expanding the program’s reach. Central to these talks was a proposal that BMGF design tailored solutions to complement plans, focusing on maternal health, family planning, and economic empowerment for women.
An official at BISP said that through such collaborations, the initiative tries to utilize existing forums for the betterment of marginalized communities in Pakistan. The joint venture also discussed future endeavors such as a poverty graduation program, which aligns with BISP’s skill-based training and targeted assistance with its vast database.
The IsDB is also anticipated to support poverty alleviation strategies. A mission from IsDB is expected to visit Islamabad in early December to finalize the discussions on the program. In addition, meetings with the Lives and Livelihoods Fund shed light on efforts to eradicate poverty among member countries.
Experts who participated in the session hosted by the Institute of Policy Studies in Islamabad were still quick to identify various areas where improvement could be seen in BISP’s operation. It would need data-driven reforms with sustainable economic opportunities to see it through in the long run.
BISP will, in the coming years, revise its social protection strategy, not only by a strengthened global partnership but by refocusing on empowering vulnerable communities.
