After 14 years and 293 episodes, CBS’s Blue Bloods said goodbye to its iconic run with an emotional finale called “End of Tour.” It was a high-stakes drama, poignant character moments, and the traditional Reagan family dinner that embodied the heart of the show.
The final episode was the culmination of a coordinated gang attack on New York, targeting the NYPD and the city’s government. The chaos resulted in the death of Officer Luis Badillo (Ian Quinlan), left Eddie Janko-Reagan (Vanessa Ray) wounded, and seriously injured Mayor Peter Chase (Dylan Walsh). This NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan, portrayed by Tom Selleck, does go to the extent of unconventional measures to bring the culprits to justice, indicating his never-ending love for the city and his family.
The episode also ended the personal storylines. Eddie had let husband Jamie (Will Estes) know about her pregnancy, while Erin (Bridget Moynahan) and Jack Boyle (Peter Hermann) remade their vows in quiet seclusion. Detective Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) moved forward on the personal front, inviting his partner Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) out for pizza after making a promise to his grandfather.
The legacy was of family unity and of resilience, in the tearful Reagan family dinner for the final scenes. Said Frank, as summed up by Tom Selleck: “Looking around this table, I couldn’t be more proud or grateful.”.
Though the cast and audience are positive regarding the revival or spin-off opportunities, the finale was an appropriate tribute to the journey of the Reagan family – duty, love, and tradition. Blue Bloods might have ended, but its presence in television history is what will be remembered.
