Chad Michael Murray has weighed in on the long-awaited reboot of One Tree Hill, finally clarifying that he does not expect to be involved. Speaking with the Los Angeles Times recently, the 43-year-old actor gave the program mixed emotions, stating that he has heard it is indeed in early development with Netflix.
โWeโre not doing it because no oneโs ever picked up the phone and said, โHey, weโre doing this,โ so weโre not doing it,โ Murray shared, referring to himself and James Lafferty, who played his on-screen half-brother, Nathan Scott.
One Tree Hill, which ran from 2003 until 2012, chronicles the interwoven lives of the people in the fictional town of Tree Hill in North Carolina. The original cast includes Murray, Lafferty, Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Bethany Joy Lenz. According to reports, Netflix’s take will have Bush and Burton play their parts once more but is also a co-producer with Danneel Ackles, which leaves fans worried as there is no word about including Murray in the reprise.
Despite his un-involvement, Murray spoke positively toward the reboot, saying, “I want it for the fans. This show has touched so many lives; if it comes back, I hope it’s something special for those who grew up with it.
He also talked about his experiences as Lucas Scott stating it was a “privilege” and an important chapter in his life. Murray has explored other roles, including the Netflix holiday film, The Merry Gentlemen, where he plays the male stripper-turned-romantic lead.
Where fans argue over the legitimacy of a reboot without its beloved original cast, Murray’s endorsement represents the enduring legacy of One Tree Hill. Regardless of whether or not he returns to Tree Hill, it will continue to be a treasured location in television history.
