TikTok Sale, According to a report that cites people with knowledge of the matter, plans are on by the Chinese government to sell US operations of the TikTok platform to tech billionaire Elon Musk. This comes when the Chinese firm TikTok’s parent, ByteDance is awaiting a total ban in the US in case its US assets are not sold before January 19.

Elon Musk owns the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and founded xAI, so he is a strategic fit for TikTok. There are more than 170 million U.S. users, so integration between TikTok and X may make X a more appealing advertising outlet and provide valuable data to Elon Musk’s AI ventures.

The Chinese government hasn’t decided yet, as discussions are preliminary. Beijing manages ByteDance and also therefore TikTok’s central recommendation algorithm. Any sale would require the Chinese government’s approval for divestment. ByteDance also maintained that it remains ready to fight anti-U.S. legislation compelling the firm to divest under charges of national security and First Amendment violations.

The U.S. Supreme Court recently heard the arguments on the proposed TikTok ban, where the justices prioritized security concerns. President-elect Donald Trump, to be sworn into office on January 20, has hinted that he would want a political resolution to preserve the app.

Musk and TikTok officials have declined to comment on the reported deal. Still, the details of the talks represent the danger that surrounds the company as the United States and China are escalating tensions. The U.S. operations worth $40–50 billion of the platform have remained a huge financial burden that often weighs on the shoulders of Musk, who is yet to clear the debt from the purchase of Twitter for $44 billion in 2022.

Under duress of time, whether TikTok would continue to operate in the US remains uncertain since governments are pondering the impact of a sell versus an outright ban.
