Chris Evans officially returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday, with Joe and Anthony Russo. Avengers: Doomsday releases on May 1, 2026. It already generates buzz since it reunites Chris Evans with roots that made him a Marvel superstar, including a few of the original cast members in the MCU.

Details of what he does in the movie remain secretive, but sources claim he will not play Captain America, though he could take on another iconic character in the film like Nomad, one of Steve Rogers’ comic-book aliases, or perhaps even introduce a new multiverse-specific character. That move goes along with the overall multiverse themes of the movie.

Evans was last seen as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame in 2019, in which his character passes the shield of Captain America to Sam Wilson, portrayed by Anthony Mackie. The latest work for Evans has been a brief cameo appearance as Johnny Storm, or the Human Torch, in Deadpool & Wolverine, referencing his role from the pre-MCU Fantastic Four franchise.

Avengers: Doomsday will supposedly be another blockbuster film starring the evil Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. Another line-up in the movie is the new Fantastic Four cast, played by Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Vanessa Kirby, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Marvel has revealed many heroes to return; so indeed, it will be a reunion of the old and new heroes.

Chris Evans reflected on the possibility of returning to the MCU, sharing, “I’ll never say never. It was such a wonderful experience, but I’d only come back if it felt meaningful.” With the Russo brothers once again leading the charge, fans are hopeful that his return will bring the depth and excitement that made his portrayal of Steve Rogers so iconic.

Avengers: Doomsday may turn out to be the movie that’s much more than just another superhero blockbuster, but a combination of beloved characters, fresh faces, and ambitious storytelling will make Marvel go way beyond its previous level for a film that could delight both the old-time fan and the newcomer.
