The world of Jeopardy! has continued its expansion with the addition of Pop Culture Jeopardy!, a new take that premiered on ABC in December before Celebrity Jeopardy! Reconvened its run on January 8. Comedian and long-time SNL cast member Colin Jost brings wit and tongue-in-cheek irreverence to the proceedings. Pop Culture is strictly a game based on pop culture questions.
Though controversy rages among fans regarding the necessity of such an addition, Jost’s biting satire and carefree nature have drawn acclaim. Best known for his great comedic timing on SNL’s Weekend Update, Jost creates a playful atmosphere that really does suit the lightness of the show. Whether it is making fun of weird team names like “Oops We Guessed It Again” or sarcastically apologizing for having to memorize rap lyrics, Jost has breathed some life into the show.
The categories run from TikTok trends to Marvel trivia, which is quite a far cry from the intellectual rigor of the original Jeopardy! Franchise. Even Jost doesn’t shy away from self-deprecation as evidenced in the “Marvelous Category,” which he quips he named in honor of his wife, Scarlett Johansson. The charm with which he makes it entertaining gives an alternative show to fans who seek something different.
While at it, the Celebrity Jeopardy! Season 3 continues with a similar light-hearted humor but remains strong in its game. However, some feel Jost’s comedic style might find its better home as he seems well-suited to the celebrity-fueled aspect of the program and could breathe more life into it.
As the world of Jeopardy! Expands, Jost’s presence with Pop Culture Jeopardy! Gives way to the idea that a niche spin-off can thrive if it has personality. Whether he seeks further hosting stints or not is of no importance because he has created enough ripples already.
