President-elect Donald Trump said Tuesday that Herschel Walker, former NFL star and Trump ally, will be nominated as U.S. ambassador to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. He announced his social media platform, emphasizing Walker’s long-standing contributions to American society.
“Herschel has been an Ambassador to our Nation’s youth, our military, and athletes at home and abroad,” said Trump, who praised the walker’s career as a businessman, philanthropist, and the former Heisman trophy winner. Trump also acknowledged his previous role as a co-chair of the President’s Council on Sports, fitness, and Nutrition during his first term.
Walker lost a U.S. Senate race in Georgia in 2022 but remains a highly polarizing figure in politics. He was vocal through much of the campaign about being an abortion opponent but was charged with having paid for two abortions, which he denied. Among these controversies, Trump has highlighted the unique qualifications that make Walker different, citing work at military installations and participating in the 1992 Winter Olympics as a bobsled team member.
Trump announced that, in addition to Walker, he would recommend Nicole McGraw as ambassador of the United States in Croatia. Describing her as a philanthropist and an art collector of antiquities, President Trump said McGraw has been a ‘champion of children’ as well as a leader for fine arts.
With the statement, Trump ended his speech giving the stern warning to Senate Republicans, not to bargain with deals offered by the Democrats and rush the nominations ahead before the new Congress convenes. He indicated that he would fill positions by January after his swearing-in.
These nominations show that Trump is going to depend on loyal allies and other high-profile figures as he prepares to enter his second term in office. All of these nominees are expected to attract significant public and political attention during the Senate confirmation process.
