FromSoftware has officially revealed Elden Ring: Nightreign, a standalone multiplayer spin-off set within the universe of the critically acclaimed Elden Ring. Announced at The Game Awards 2024, this three-player cooperative experience is a bold departure from the developer’s traditional Soulslike formula.
Directed by Junya Ishizaki, Nightreign emphasizes teamwork and strategic combat. Players command heroes with unique skills and each their ability and must fight against an inescapable “creeping night” that alters the environment every time. Other features include wall-climbing, aerial combat involving spectral animals, and hazards like a burning purple wall of flame, described as an intense challenge to play through.
Although Nightreign is very much like the Monster Hunter series, it still incorporates FromSoftware’s hallmark boss fights and complex world design. Cooperative PvE and individual hero moments ensure that each character brings their best skills to the fight.
The presence of familiar places such as Roundtable Hold and what looks like Volcano Manor could indicate that it is a prequel to the game Elden Ring. One hero resembles Malenia, sporting wings and an impressive aerial attack that can destroy waves of enemies.
Official description from the site, “Take control of heroes whose powers multiply exponentially when united. Conquer shifting lands and defeat mighty bosses in this new, ever-changing adventure.”
Elden Ring: Nightreign has already received a lot of buzz as it promises to bring fresh ideas and deeper lore. This game is scheduled for 2025. Although it is not a direct sequel to the game, FromSoftware has shown that it commits to the evolution of its storytelling and gameplay.
Combined with dynamic environments, tight combat, and cooperative multiplayer, Nightreign will reboot the Elden Ringworld, bringing a fresh familiar experience to veterans and new players alike.
