Lieutenant Gen Asim Malik is being elevated to assume the position of director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence, for which he will assume charge from September 30. The ISPR confirmed the appointment, and state broadcaster PTV News reported it.
General Muhammad Asim Malik is currently serving in the rank of lieutenant general and as Adjutant General at General Headquarters, Rawalpindi. In his military career, he has commanded an infantry division in Balochistan as well as served as an infantry brigade commander in the Waziristan region, an area in critical defense of Pakistan. He has served as Chief Instructor at National Defence University, NDU, and as Instructor at Command and Staff College Quetta.
He is also a recipient of the prestigious Sword of Honour. Lt Gen Malik, who has an illustrious academic background, is a graduate of both the Royal College of Defence Studies in the UK and the United States Army’s Fort Leavenworth.
Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum played a crucial role in the country’s domestic and international security. His stint did overlap the civil-military discussions about the appointment of Pakistan’s spymaster.
Gen Malik’s appointment at such a time is likely to result in continuity and much-needed strategic oversight of Pakistan’s intelligence operations in the backdrop of complex security challenges within the country and abroad facing the ISI.
