This is death in the distinctive fear of the legendary Candyman, Tony Todd, best known for his chilling appearance as the iconic Candyman, died November 6th at 69 in his Los Angeles home. He is perhaps best known for his commanding screen presence, with a career stretching nearly half a century and nearly 250 film and TV credits.
Born on December 4, 1954, in Washington, D.C., Todd trained at the Eugene O’Neill National Actors Theatre Institute and Trinity Rep Conservatory. It was in Oliver Stone’s Platoon that he made his early breakout role, after which he appeared in television staples of the 1980s and ’90s, including 21 Jump Street, The X-Files, and Star Trek. he emerged as a proper icon in horror cinema after casting in the 1992 horror film Candyman. He reprised the role in 2021 as Todd’s deep, intense voice reinvigorated the character of Daniel Robitaille, a vengeful spirit, for generations to come as one of horror’s most enduring figures.
Todd’s portfolio was far from horror, though. There was the mystifyingly enigmatic mortician in Final Destination, the impassioned performances in video games and animated series from Transformers Prime to Call of Duty, each highlighting the sheer breadth of characters villains and soldiers to aliens and preachers-and the gravitas and warmth he brings to each, regardless of genre.
More than just acting, Todd was benevolent and kind. He continued acting into 2024, appearing in independent films as well as blockbuster productions. Nothing has been announced about his survivors. Fans and the fraternity remember Todd as an icon in the industry and a wonderful actor whose work in horror and film will never end.
