Indianapolis, IN – A 33-year-old Indianapolis woman was arrested Saturday evening on charges of neglect of a dependent resulting in death after a 2-year-old child died.
The IMPD said police were called at around 6:30 p.m. on January 25 to the 6300 block of Newberry Road, just off Shadeland Avenue and Fall Creek Road. The officers were there to investigate the death of a child.
Preliminary findings led to the arrest of the woman, whose name is found in public records as Chantell Monae Gardner. She is charged with neglect of a dependent under the age of 14 resulting in death, a Level 1 Felony under Indiana law. Conviction could result in a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
While the case is still under investigation, police have not yet released further details surrounding the circumstances of the child’s death. The apartment complex where the incident occurred has been secured for additional examination as detectives work to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
According to IMPD, no formal charges have been filed yet, as the case is being reviewed by prosecutors. Updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
