Controversial streamer Johnny Somali has apologized publicly to South Korea following possibly having spent time in a South Korean prison for his actions within the country. Johnny Somali, whose real name is Ramsey Khalid Ismael, is currently under investigation for alleged narcotics possessionโa charge which could send him to prison for ten years in the utterly strict drug laws in South Korea.
In the past weeks, Somalian has been very provocative, being seen kissing and twerking on the Statue of Peace which angered South Koreans. The statue is in commemoration of victims of Japanese sexual slavery during World War II. The South Korean parliament also weighed in disapproving the moves, and both locals and streamers condemned the moves.
On November 7, Johnny Somali addressed the situation, admitting his mistake and his regrets over his actions. “I’m a young person, and I want to grow. I made a mistake. I apologize and will no longer talk about or touch the statue,” Somali said. Somali attributed his behavior to a cultural misunderstanding between U.S. and South Korean comedy styles.
Although Somali apologized for his previous actions, controversies regarding Somali in the past such as getting banned from streaming services like Kick and Twitch over time have raised many questions about his apology. His previous scandal in Japan and Israel as well as a record of prior legal issues has also been questioned. His arrest and current detention in South Korea put his future at risk as he waits to know what will happen next on this latest legal problem.
