Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, announced that he has been moving with a major cabinet shuffle amid the resignation of his Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland. Trudeau is under immense pressure amid declining popularity and the pileup of national challenges to resign as Canada’s Prime Minister.
In Ottawa, Trudeau hosted a swearing-in ceremony during which he unveiled new cabinet members, such as Ontario MP David McGuinty as the Minister of Public Safety and Nathaniel Erskine-Smith as the Housing Minister. This comes in the wake of Freeland’s resignation over disagreements with Canada’s strategy to counter potential U.S. tariffs.
The resignation letter from Freeland underscored her concerns about the economic nationalism of the incoming U.S. administration, which may trigger “tariff wars.” Her resignation has added fuel to the fire for Liberal Party members and opposition lawmakers demanding that Trudeau step down.
Criticisms that would befall Prime Minister Trudeau about the crisis in Canada related to the country’s real estate crisis and the increased price of living, as Mr. Trudeau has been its prime minister since 2015, will come at a most inopportune time in late 2025-and recent polls have the liberal party running significantly behind Conservatives.
However, increasing internal and external pressure is yet to prompt a final decision from the prime minister on his political future. Senior cabinet discussions of the issue are likely to wrap up early next year. Meanwhile, the left-leaning New Democratic Party announced on Tuesday that it planned to move a no-confidence motion in Parliament when it convenes in January, thereby putting the government on a slippery slope toward early elections.
Liberal ministers however seemed in one voice at the Friday’s ceremony. Treasury Board President Ginette Petitpas Taylor reassured that the party will support Trudeau and continue working to serve Canadians.
It’s going to be a significant few months for Trudeau as well as his government. Tensions run high amidst the political scenario.
