Actor Mark Williams, best known for his portrayal of Father Brown in the popular BBC series, recently spoke about some memorable moments and unique challenges while filming. Now 65, Williams has played the titular role since 2013, captivating audiences with his portrayal of the clergyman-turned-detective.
In a candid interview, Williams shared a humorous anecdote involving an embarrassing mishap on set. While filming a chase scene, the actor, who rides a Pashley bicycle as part of his character’s persona, was not comfortable on gravel paths. “I hit some deep gravel and couldn’t stop in time. I fell off sideways,” Williams admitted, laughing at the memory. He added, “A young lad saw me from the hotel kitchen and burst out laughing. I was happy to give him a good laugh!
The period drama, set in 1950s Kembleford, is lauded for its authentic costumes, locations, and vintage cars. Williams praised the old cars but laughingly confessed to “car envy” since Father Brown does not have a car. His bicycle instead has become an integral part of the character if it does prove a nuisance at times.
Aside from Father Brown, Williams is probably most famous for the role of Arthur Weasley in Harry Potter. Recollecting his years of career and experience, a lot of styles in acting were attributed to one Peter Falk who featured as Columbo. As recalled, “Even managed to slip Columbo’s line, ‘Just one more thing,’ during the scene. Very personal highlight”.
As Father Brown is set to begin its 12th season, viewers expect to enjoy even more of Williams’ affable performance as the resourceful and quick-witted priest. The new season premieres on BBC One and iPlayer on January 10 and promises another delectable mystery to be filmed against the picturesque backdrop of the Cotswolds.
