In the latest hit Netflix show Missing You, an adaptation of Harlan Coben’s 2014 novel, Mary Malone stars as the up-and-coming performer Aqua, a yoga instructor and close friend to Detective Kat Donovan, played by Rosalind Eleazar. The secrets she holds interlace with the mystery at hand in the series, giving more complexity to her character.
In an interview, Malone described Aqua as a “perky, chakra-loving yoga teacher,” but then morphs into a complicated character forced to confront her past. Malone said the character changed from the book, where she used outdated terms. “We wanted to ground Aqua as a fully realized trans woman,” Malone said, paying high praise to the production team for its thoughtful representation.
Apart from her role in Missing You, Malone has performed in a few projects such as Doctor Who, Fangirls, and others on the UK stage. On the sets, she had the support of Trans+ On Screen for an authentic depiction. “I felt safe and supported,” she shared, referring to the initiative and her co-stars, Richard Armitage and Rosalind Eleazar, for camaraderie.
Malone’s career curve is steeped, with this role in Missing You being at the forefront of a great movement. “I hope this proves to people that trans actors can lead diverse, complex roles,” she said. She is tight-lipped about upcoming projects but was quick to state that things look promising, “Stay tuned” she added as Missing You unfolds and gains followers worldwide.
In this respect, Malone’s performances will always remind one of becoming a star rising in the show business world.
