The only eye-witness of Pakistan’s latest Test win over England, Mohammad Amir appears to still stand by his captain Babar Azam who has been under a microscope following his team’s win over the visitors. For the first time since February 2021, Pakistan have won a match outside their jurisdiction and the opening of debates among the fans and analysts point to the absence of Azam as the sole reason behind the success of his team.

In Pakistan’s match against England during the game, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) withdrew key players, including Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Sarfraz Ahmed, particularly from the second Test. The ruling left many thinking that this could be a survival strategy toward invigorating the team from the pathetic series of recent matches. Actually, in the absence of Azam, a debutant named Kamran Ghulam came in and notched a century, which just amplified criticism of Azam’s recent form.

Commentative social media gave full ammunition to this phrase that Pakistan only won as Azam was left out. The inability of his Test cricket to score consistently had been an all-time prime reason for earlier setbacks, for fans and critics.

Mohammad Amir, one of the sport’s more vocal voices, reacted to such claims and appealed to fans to desist from personal attacks on Azam. He claimed that it was a well-planned strategy that fetched the win and not just because of the absence of any particular individual. “Please stop with these petty talks that Babar was not on the team; that is why we won,” Amir said on X, formerly Twitter.

He further emphasized that cricketers too require the fans’ support in the bad times and said there should be constructive criticism instead of unwarranted blame. Amir’s message is that one should back the players and appreciate them for their contributions even when they are not performing well.
