Strike in Karachi
A countrywide shutter-down strike has been observed today with the full participation of Karachi’s business community. The call for this strike was made by the Jamaat-i-Islami with the support of the JUI-F against the government’s tax policies, which were completely rejected by the traders’ community in Karachi and other main cities.
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has stressed the need for this strike to mount pressure on the government. He strongly lashed out at the government’s tax regime, focusing much on how it dampens the spirit of small traders in Karachi and called for the union of traders to thwart the infringement of rights. Traders in Karachi also join other big cities like, for example, Lahore and Islamabad, furious over the newly welcomed across-the-board software-based audit initiative by FBR, referred to as the “Tajir Dost Scheme.” They protest against the government’s above-mentioned lopsided policy of the Tajir Dost Scheme-it being so unfair and one-sided against their small businesses more stirs in Karachi as well.
The strike was a significant moment of unity between the political and business fraternity against what they call harsh government policies. From Faulana Fazlur Rehman down to Hafiz Naeemur Rehman called upon the people to actively participate in the strike that was termed imperative to hold the government accountable and gave much-needed respite to the country’s hapless traders and citizens.
