Set during the violent and harsh era of the Old West with cultural clashes, religious fervor, and survival issues in 1850s Utah, American Primeval is a new drama Netflix series. Directed by Pete Berg, it portrays life ten years after Brigham Young led the Latter-day Saints into the Salt Lake Valley. It narrates struggles in the harsh landscape amid a battle for survival.
Netflix describes the series, as capturing “a violent collision of culture, religion, and community.” As the synopsis goes, “It’s an intense world where tranquility is eaten away by fear and hate,” and the show itself focuses on the harrowing existence of settlers, Indigenous tribes, and outlaws.
The story revolves around fictionalized versions of Jacob and Abish Pratt, a Mormon pioneer family; they are portrayed by Dane DeHaan and Saura Lightfoot-Leon. Joe Tippett also portrays the conflicted persona of a latter-day saint militia leader; Alex Breaux stars as the frontiersman Wild Bill Hickman, known to have led skirmishes against the Timpanogos people. Kim Coates plays Brigham Young, depicting a determined leader who’d go to any length necessary for the survival of the persecuted followers, even though the militia, the Nauvoo Legion.
Notable is the representation of the Indigenous in the movie. The film has Derek Hinkey as a character from the Crow nation. It guarantees a unique Old West look, focusing on Utah’s history and the intense conflicts settlers and the Indigenous were facing.
Like all of the other extremely popular LDS programs, the American Primeval show hits the ground running on January 9 and is on its way to bringing a reality that, on the one hand, speaks for itself.
