Streaming platform, Netflix, experienced a severe service breakdown last night that locked out thousands of users across the United States from accessing it. This attack was after the company logged a major service disruption during a much-awaited live boxing event between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul that recorded massive viewer traffic.
Outage tracking website Downdetector.com said the number of users complaining of problems peaked at 85,021 by 10:35 p.m. ET (0335 GMT Saturday). The problem primarily affected major metropolitan areas like New York, Seattle, and Los Angeles, though some reports were mentioned from other areas.
Netflix has also not made any public announcement over the failure. Historically, technical failures of the company are experienced during live events or high-demanding events that are blamed on sudden spikes in user activities.
Recently, in April 2023, the reality dating show Love is Blind also experienced the same failure when it went live, which frustrations to thousands of disappointed viewers as follows:
By 9:21 p.m. ET, Downdetector reported that the number of problem reports had dropped to 5,114, and it seems like things are slowly easing out. Of course, the brief halt didn’t make it easy for viewers eagerly waiting to catch the boxing event.
This is one of the challenges facing streaming services as they also try to enter the live programming arena without experiencing a hitch in services during increased demand.
