The Nigerian Army has set up an investigation into a viral video allegedly showing a Major General and his aides assaulting a couple following a road incident. According to reports, the altercation began after the couple outpaced the officer’s vehicle, and that disagreement escalated into violence. The incident, which has sparked huge nationwide outrage, speaks to issues of military-civilian relations in Nigeria. (Read About Kwankwasoโs Potential Role in Peter Obiโs 2027)
In the video, soldiers can be seen physically assaulting the young man while the female passenger was attacked for recording the encounter. The helpless couple has since filed a lawsuit demanding N150 million in compensation for the ordeal.
In reaction to public outcry, Acting Chief of Army Staff Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede directed a full-scale investigation into the matter. According to him, Nigerian Army personnel should not act contrary to the rule of law and respect the rights of civilians. “Army officers have no right to settle disputes with Nigerians on the street. Such matters are for the police to investigate,” Lt. General Oluyede said.
The video has reopened the issue of military personnel’s behavior in civil life. Some advocacy groups and citizens have condemned the series of events, urging that responsibility be taken so that such acts do not repeat themselves in the future. Critics argue that such an act erodes trust in military authorities and violates some fundamental rights.
The Nigerian Army promised that it would be transparent about its investigation and that there would indeed be consequences for those found responsible. Many in Nigeria, however, hope that the incident sparks more far-reaching reforms within the military by demanding professionalism and respect for rights over civilian authority.
