OpenAI has introduced new ways to access its AI chatbot, ChatGPT. The company has introduced a phone service in the United States and integrated it with WhatsApp worldwide. These features are expected to make AI interaction easier for users worldwide.

Users in the U.S. can dial 1-800-CHATGPT to reach ChatGPT. This free service limits call time to 15 minutes a month per phone number, thus offering an easily accessible way in for new users unfamiliar with ChatGPT’s web-based interface.

With a WhatsApp collaboration, OpenAI makes messaging possible to ChatGPT via 1-800-242-8478. An interface such as WhatsApp with users exceeding two billion people, there are a lot of places one could explore AI penetration into various regions.

” This is one step closer to making AI more accessible to regular users,” OpenAI Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil said in a live stream. The telephone service uses the OpenAI Realtime API, and the WhatsApp feature uses the GPT-4o mini model integrated with the WhatsApp API.

According to OpenAI, the features being released are meant to serve newcomers in accessing the experience of ChatGPT in an easier manner. Users requiring greater functionality should stick with the web version of the product.

The project reflects OpenAI’s goal to bridge the gap between cutting-edge AI and less tech-savvy users. Unlike similar past projects, such as Google’s GOOG-411, OpenAI assured users that data from calls would not train its AI models, addressing privacy concerns.

Within this larger framework, AI tools are made more available while managing the escalating cost of its advanced models. Upgrades, new capabilities, and increased access would then depend on the market and customer demand.

Currently, it’s only accessible within the U.S. whereas WhatsApp is available to any part of the world. Both services are a form of democratizing AI for users.
