Pakistan Approves Military Operation in Balochistan, In an aggressive effort to tackle growing violence in Balochistan, Pakistan’s Apex Federal Committee has agreed on a comprehensive operation against terrorist organizations. The announcement was made during a high-level meeting presided over by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, aimed at countering threats from Majeed Brigade, BLA, BLF, and BRAS. The effort is the bedrock of the National Action Plan to combat terrorism.
Chief of the Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir reiterated before the committee that all Pakistanis share a collective responsibility in this fight against terrorism. “The Constitution has imposed on us the responsibility of the internal and external security of Pakistan. Every Pakistani, whether in uniform or not, is a front-line warrior in this war,” he said. Munir cautioned that serious consequences await those who hamper efforts toward national security.
While very critical to regaining stability, the operation has invoked criticism from human rights activists as a ‘recipe for disaster’ in Balochistan as it would only further intensify the tension. The area has had bad ties with the central government for centuries. Numerous military operations against local communities, wherein local grievances could be further aggravated, have smeared its relation with the central government. Furthermore, potential human rights violations remain a point of concern, and many demand a more inclusive and sustainable approach to address the root causes of unrest.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif claimed that the government reiterated its commitment to security along with conformity to the Constitution. He asked citizens and law enforcers to unite to defeat terrorism, saying that Pakistan’s armed forces have rendered sacrifices to keep the country stable.
When Pakistan mounts this arduous operation, the international community and the local stakeholders will surely track the security effects and human rights effects in Balochistan. The main challenge remains striking the balance between counterterrorism efforts with long-term peace in the region.
