The nomination of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense is facing a major obstacle because of the serious issues highlighted by some of Donald Trump’s closest allies, including senators on the Republican side, to raise questions about Pete Hegseth’s fitness for the post. These include claims of ethical violations in his previous engagements and a drinking history which will impact his ability to lead the high-pressure portfolio at the Pentagon. He has denied all claims but there has been a whistleblower claim on inappropriate behavior while managing the veterans’ organization and another about alcohol-related incidents on Fox News. Some GOP senators worry these allegations could derail his confirmation.
The nomination puts Senate Republicans in a precarious position. Since the Senate majority is slim, Pete Hegseth can suffer only three GOP defections if all Democrats oppose him. Sen. Lindsey Graham and Sen. Joni Ernst have expressed reservations. Ernst, an Iraq combat veteran and survivor of sexual assault has become a key figure in determining the outcome.
Behind the scenes, the Trump transition team is cobbling together alternatives. Names floated as possible replacements if Pete Hegseth’s nomination stumbles include Senate Ernst herself, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and Tennessee Senator Bill Hagerty.
This sounds pretty similar to debates of old, particularly in 1989 when the senate rejected John Tower for similar reasons. With the mounting allegations on his back, key senators now are demanding a whole vetting process, including public hearings and the FBI background check. Only time will tell if Pete Hegseth will be able to brush through these challenges or settle down for Trump to settle to somebody who is not such a strong influencer in politics.
