A pickup truck collided with a Tesla Cybertruck, causing a chain reaction crash involving two other vehicles, on the southbound 5 Freeway Beach Boulevard exit in Orange County late Friday night.
It happened at around 7:22 p.m., surveillance footage of which was time-stamped. According to initial reports, a white Chevrolet pickup slammed into Tesla’s rear at a red light, where the Cybertruck just happened to collide with a van and an Infiniti.
Emergency responders arrived swiftly and worked to extricate the driver of the Chevrolet, whose truck sustained significant damage. The Tesla Cybertruck sustained a rear-end impact and minor front-end collision. The other two vehicles are still not clear as to the extent of damage made.
The driver in the Chevrolet was a male and was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition. Other major injury reports were not received.
In testimony by witness Devin Duckworth, the series of events was described: “As soon as the Tesla stopped at the red light, the white truck did not stop and hit it. So it pushed it into the other cars.”
Preliminary investigation findings point to the likelihood that the driver may have fallen asleep while in the vehicle; however, authorities have not confirmed this conclusion.
Of course, this incident underscores the need to educate drivers more especially at night. Law enforcers are still investigating and analyzing videos for more information about the crash.
Traffic was interrupted on the off-ramp for some time before clearing up as emergency personnel took away the vehicles involved. There has been no citation or charge pending so far.
This multi-vehicle collision is quite a reminder to be more careful and watchful on busy freeways, especially during the holiday travel season.
