Hollywood legend Richard Gere and his wife, Alejandra Silva, visited Málaga to see the spectacular musical Gypsy by Antonio Banderas, which received the highest praise from the public and critics. The couple recently moved to Spain and were guest stars of Teatro del Soho CaixaBank as they watched one of the last shows before Gypsy moves to Madrid.
Directed by Banderas, Gypsy was applauded for the refreshing take on this Broadway show with a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Lead actress Marta Ribera was outstanding in the role of Rose and even Gere confessed, laughing, “I don’t speak a word of Spanish, but I loved it.”
On social media, the theater team could not hide their excitement, sharing a photo of the couple and thanking Gere for visiting them. Banderas was grateful as well; he referred to Gere as a “dear friend” and welcomed him warmly to the Soho Theatre.
After the play, Gere and his wife, Caryn McBride, joined Banderas and his partner, Nicole Kimpel, for dinner at Doña Inés, the fusion restaurant famous for its Argentine food in the Soho district in Málaga. The atmosphere and the type of food prepared were perfect to soothe and enjoy after a very long and hot performance.
On January 9, the Geres briefly visited Málaga and ended their short visit early in the morning the next day. While there, they were housed in the elite Gran Hotel Miramar, right along La Malagueta Beach.
The Gypsy run in Málaga ends on January 12 but will resume at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid on February 7. All performances have sold out, and Gypsy remains a theatrical experience of top rank in Spain.
