Indeed, Smokey Robinson and Halle Bailey unite in hosting “A Motown Christmas.” This very special episode will be on at 9/8c over on NBC on December 11 before hitting Peacock the day thereafter -and will celebrate Motown the historic recording powerhouse’s timeless influence on popular and vernacular culture.
The show will feature more than 25 of the most famous Motown songs, including “My Girl,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” and “Dancing in the Streets.” Robinson himself will include such Motown classics as “Tears of a Clown” and “Tracks of My Tears,” and Bailey will pay tribute to Diana Ross and The Supremes with an unforgettable medley.
The event brings together a star-studded lineup, including Gladys Knight, The Temptations, Jamie Foxx, Ashanti, Andra Day, and more. Hosted by an 11-piece live band led by Emmy-winning musical director Rickey Minor, the night promises unforgettable performances blending gospel, jazz, and rock.
The 84-year-old Robinson sits with pride regarding the fact that Motown touches generations of people. Bailey, 24, considers Motown music to be “universal,” explaining that it designed her childhood Christmas memories: “Baby Love” and “The Tracks of My Tears.”
Beyond the music, Motown was the voice for Black artists in a difficult time of social change and gave birth to legends such as Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. This commemoration recalls for fans an important contribution the label had made to American culture.
