The International Cricket Council has announced the nominees of its prestigious ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2024 award. Pakistan’s opening batter Saim Ayub is also included in the list. The nomination would have surely marked Ayub’s tremendous contribution to international cricket this year.
Saim Ayub has shown himself to be a big performer for Pakistan, racking up 1,254 runs in just 41 innings. His scintillating record comes with three and a half centuries in nine One-Day International (ODI) matches. He has perhaps made his best knock of 109 runs off 119 balls in a match when Pakistan whitewashed its opponent.
Ayub will be challenged in the men’s category by three other emerging talents: Gus Atkinson from England, Shamar Joseph from West Indies, and Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis. Atkinson produced 52 wickets in 11 matches with a deadly pace. Joseph produced 29 wickets in Test matches by bowling fast. On the other end, Mendis showed off his all-round abilities by scoring 1,451 runs in 33 matches.
The following are also some promising talents in the women’s category: Shreyanka Patel from India, Saskia Harley from Scotland, Anri Dirksen from South Africa, and Freya Sargent from Ireland. All these nominees have shown exceptional skills and promise throughout the year.
The ICC will keep taking nominations until December 30, and the winners will be announced in January 2025. These awards include 12 categories to celebrate the players performing spectacular performances in 2024.
