The Dubai Sports Council has appointed former tennis star Sania Mirza as its latest ambassador. Sania Mirza was announced as the newest ambassador of the Dubai Sports Council at the “Dubai Sports Retreat,” which was an elite ceremony held at the Museum of the Future in Dubai. Other big sportspeople who attended the event included UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh.
Mirza, a six-time Grand Slam champion and ex-world No. 1 in women’s doubles, took to Instagram to thank the emirate for the opportunity. “Honoured and grateful to be a sports ambassador for Dubai! Thank you for this incredible opportunity, Dubai Sports Council, she posted for her followers, informing them about her new role and excitement.
The Dubai Sports Council is an organization formed in 2005 to make Dubai a global sports hub that aims to introduce the notion of culture in health and wellness into UAE society. The corporation has chosen international sports figures as ambassadors as part of its wider vision to promote a lifestyle of exercise and increase the city’s stature as a city in the lead for sports.
The Crown Prince, Sheik Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, attended the event and called it important. “The ideas and insights shared at the event will shape a brighter future for the sport, improve our clubs’ achievements, and nurture local talent,” he noted on social media, underlining Dubai’s commitment to sporting excellence.
Mirza moved to Dubai after her marriage in 2010 to be with her husband Shoaib Malik, a Pakistani cricketer. Although they are separated, they stay in the city along with their son Izhaan Malik. Mirza has made the city her “second home” by participating in Dubai’s lively sports scene.
