Severance is coming back to Apple TV+ on January 17, after a three-year wait, and will continue to unravel the mysteries surrounding Lumon Industries and its severed employees. The series, directed and executive produced by Ben Stiller, takes the psychological and ethical shock of splitting one’s consciousness into “innies” (work selves) and “outies” (personal selves).
The first season ended on a cliffhanger, revealing that Miss Casey (Dichen Lachman), Lumon’s wellness counselor, is Gemma, the supposedly deceased wife of protagonist Mark S. (Adam Scott). It also uncovered that Helly R. (Britt Lower), Mark’s colleague, is the innie of Helena Eagan, an heir to the Lumon dynasty.
Critics who saw all 10 episodes of the new season, however, applaud its continued mastery of mood and mystery, calling it even stranger than its predecessor. The second season digs deeper into Lumon’s motives, hinting at answers about the company’s secretive “Cold Harbor” initiative, which seems to demand Mark and Gemma’s involvement.
A Workplace Comedy with a Dark Twist
Stiller says Severance is like a workplace comedy, except it’s surreal and dystopian. The show adds more characters to its cast this season, including Sarah Bock as the child manager Miss Huang and Alia Shawkat in a key role. The innies and outies continue to get weirder, this time with Helena Eagan in charge and Irving (John Turturro) dealing with his innie’s memories of a forbidden romance.
Fans will see more of Severance’s unique fusion of creepy imagery, corporate satire, and poignant explorations of identity. The premiere will stream at midnight Pacific Time, with episodes continuing to be released every Friday.
Well, the wait is finally over for viewers, and Lumon’s fluorescent-lit hallways are now ready to spill more secrets.
