Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi, seen speaking to the media in Lahore on his way to an anti-terrorism court, has thanked the country’s political leadership for opposing the idea of banning PTI, believing it would be bad for the political culture of the country.
Qureshi appreciated PPP and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman for the rejection of resolutions against the PTI ban. He further praised Mahmood Achakzai and other opposition leaders for such a position. “Imposition of any ban on PTI will prove to be a political and historic blunder”, he stated, adding further, that the country would also plunge into chaos.
Criticizing Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as “an attack on the people’s mandate”, Qureshi said that political stability is key to economic recovery and threatened that if the authoritarian measure is enforced or election engineering happens, they will not only fail to deliver legitimacy but also permanent solutions.
Qureshi further appealed to authorities to arrange a meeting between him and PTI Chairman Imran Khan, which will help solve the current political crises. He termed the whole crackdown against PTI unprecedented in Pakistan’s history and called for a judicial commission to probe allegations of having excessive force against protesters.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif defended the government’s hard stance against PTI’s repeated attempts to storm Islamabad as threats to peace and economic stability. The opposition parties, however, including ANP, cautioned that such steps might further polarize the people.
Qureshi again asked for reconciliation and urged political leaders to think of the nation’s welfare. “National dialogue is the only sustainable path to achieving stability,” he concluded.
