Shawn Mendes has opened up about his deteriorating relationship with ex-Camila Cabello and revealed that despite not being as close as they used to be, they still understand each other very well. Mendes dated the singer-songwriter for two years before the breakup in 2021 and reflected on their bond in an honest interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1.
“We haven’t been the closest over the last couple of years,” Mendes admitted. “But I think we know each other’s hearts.” Though it’s been some time since they broke up a few years ago, the two especially know each other, Mendes said, describing how they could see through all other noise and connect on a deeper level.
This emotional honesty, Mendes noted, was one of the foundation stones on which their relationship was built and remains an enduring part of their friendship. Mendes, now 26, said that the time they spend together is important because it’s a time for personal growth. “I’m grateful for Camila being there when I needed someone to help balance my life,” he reflected. He also jokingly recalled how Cabello would have him chill, confessing, “She would get angry if I did not treat myself sometimes,” a thing he enjoyed that anchored him.
Although Mendes had a brief reconciliation with Cabello in 2023, he remains chatty about Cabello, underlining the privacy that was kept despite the public interest. In a recent Jay Shetty interview last year, Mendes touched upon the pressure of having been in the spotlight when he commented that it hadn’t been easy to live a private life with such an all-consuming relationship.
Since breaking up, Mendes and Cabello would text each other now and then, Mendes said. “As long as we’re good, all the noise is just noise,” he said. In a way, Mendes appreciated Cabello for being considerate, giving her a perfect adjective, saying that she is thoughtful and caring.
Both artists are moving forward in their lives, and Mendes’s words say much more to prove how deep his respect is for his former lover-he considers that the current friendship they have surpassed the romance.
